 A database is a store of data. In a dynamic Web site environment, the Web server has contact with another server on which the database is held. This is because databases require considerable processing power to ensure that requests are processed rapidly.
Popular databases include SQLServer (from Microsoft), MySQL (from MySQL AB), and FileMaker (from FileMaker). SQLServer runs on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 server. MySQL runs on UNIX systems, and FileMaker runs on both Windows and Mac servers. Out of these three, MySQL is the only software that is free-of-charge. Both Microsoft and Filemaker require a licensing fee for development and use.
