Moving on from iWeb

iWeb puts me in a spin...Freeway is Web design software for those who have reached the boundaries of iWeb’s capabilities. Whereas iWeb’s template-based approach is suited to specific types of personal websites, Freeway allows users to create any website they can imagine. An easy-to-use interface puts the designer in control of the functionality of the Web, without needing to learn the code behind it all.

Standards Compliance

iWeb: Does not produce valid HTML.

Freeway: All Freeway-created websites produce valid HTML.

Code Editing

iWeb: Limited to HTML Snippets which are blocks of code added directly into the page.

Freeway: As well as allowing HTML code to be inserted directly into the page, most objects can be edited within Freeway to add attributes to their corresponding tags in the HTML output. Also, code snippets can be inserted directly into several predefined positions related to key tags in the page output.

Plugins

iWeb: Has no support for plugins.

Freeway: Freeway Actions - Javascript plugins capable of adding dynamic functionality to web pages, for example rollovers, navigation bars, blogging and CMS’s. Large selection of Actions installed by default. Many new plugins available from our website. Active third-party development of Actions.

Templates

iWeb: Has many built-in templates. All sites are created from templates, but do not allow much customization of the overall appearance of the site.

Freeway: It is not required to use templates, although several are provided. If a template is used, all aspects of it can be modified after the document is created. Any document created in Freeway can be made into a template. This will collect all of the document's associated resources together so the template can be used anywhere.

Master Pages

iWeb: Has no support for master pages.

Freeway: Master pages can be created in any site. Common elements in a web site can be created on a master page, and then all pages based on that master will contain those elements as well as its own.

Web Hosting and Uploading

iWeb: Supports uploading to .Mac accounts. Sites can be uploaded to other web hosting, but it has to be done manually using an FTP client and some features will not work.

Freeway: Built-in upload to any web hosting, including .Mac.

E-commerce

iWeb: No support for e-commerce.

Freeway: Built in Freeway Shop can easily create links to Mal’s e-commerce, a free online shopping cart system with access to online payment gateways.

HTML Tables

iWeb: No support for HTML tables
