Freeway Express Mac App Store version
Due to certain restrictions with the rules of acceptability for products on the Apple App Store, the version of Freeway 5.5 Express has some differences to the version sold direct from the Softpress site at www.softpress.com. The differences are listed below, along with instructions on how to work with the Mac App Store version to follow the normal tutorials in the Freeway 5 Reference and the Using Freeway guide.
Showcase Application
The standalone Showcase application is not downloaded with the Freeway Express Mac App Store version - you will need to download this separately from http://www.softpress.com/products/freeway/showcase. Click on the Download button to save the disk image to your hard disk then, in the disk image window, drag and drop the Showcase Action into the Applications folder.
If you want to make it easy to launch the Showcase application each time, you might want to open your Applications folder then drag and drop the Showcase application icon into your Dock.
You can read about how to create a quick and simple slideshow and thumbnail gallery in the What's New section of the Using Freeway guide. You can download the guide from http://www.softpress.com/support/usermanuals/ and you will find the section starting on page 131. This section is just a "getting started" guide for Showcase, but at the end of the Using Freeway guide (starting on page 156) you will find a complete reference guide to Showcase which explains every option in detail within the Showcase application and the Showcase Action.
iPhoto Import
The version of Freeway Express sold direct from the Softpress site has a specific option in the File menu to import images from your iPhoto library. This option is not available in the Mac App Store version, but it is simple enough to select a graphic item, go to File>Import, click on Photos in the Media section of the Finder window's sidebar and then choose iPhoto in the list to see your iPhoto images and albums.
FLV Player Action
The FLV Player Action lets you offer alternative file formats to an FLV video file. This is because iPhones and iPads will not play Flash video.
The FLV Player Action supplied with Freeway Express Mac App Store version is different to the Action bundled with Freeway Express bought direct from the Softpress site in that the Action does cannot create an alternative file format of the FLV movie within Freeway itself. In the normal version of Freeway Express, clicking on a button called Generate automatically creates (and links to) a .3gp file (for visitors using pre-iPhone3G devices) and a .m4v file (for 3G and later iPhones and iPads).
Freeway Express Mac App Store users can still offer alternative movie, but they will need to create their own .3gp and .m4v versions of the FLV movie and then select the appropriate movie file in the relevant popup in the FLV Player Action palette.
The movie tutorial at http://www.softpress.com/support/tutorials (Episode 14) explains how to work with the normal version of Freeway Express - but Mac App Store version users can choose the iPhone/Pad compatible alternative movie formats (after they have created them outside of Freeway) in the Actions palette.
